John Baxter   Elizabeth Pryce
JOHN BAXTER was born May 01, 1804 in Montgomeryshire, Wales, and died 08 Dec 1898. He immigrated to a Welsh settlement in Pennsylvania before 1832 by way of Liverpool, England, and became a naturalized citizen in 1835 at Ebensburg, Cambria Co. Penn. He married ELIZABETH PRYCE, daughter of DAVID PRYCE and MARGARET BAXTER. She was born November 23, 1811 in Pensylvania, and died August 13, 1873 in Sharon Center, Iowa. Her family emigrate from Wales earlier. John and Elizabeth were farmers and owned a large property in Carroll Township, Cambria Co. Sometime after son John was born in 1853 and before 1860 they moved their entire family to the Welsh settlement at Old Man's Creek. They farmed in Sharon Township, Johnson Co., Iowa and attended the Welsh
1804 - 1898 1811 - 1873
Congregational Church at Old Man's Creek. Both died in Sharon Center and were buried at the Welsh Church Cemetery.

Marriage Notes:  notes made by Rev R.D.Thomas in 1851-2: "... married his first cousin, Elizabeth Pryce (who was also a first cousin of his brother William's wife, Ann Pryce, at home in Wales! [Gwawr Jones])

     
David Baxter       = Mary J. ?


1831/2 - 1895

DAVID BAXTER was born Bet. 1831 - 1832 in Pennsylvania, and died August 12, 1895 in Keokuk Co, Iowa. He moved with his parents to Iowa. David married MARY J. She was born Bet. 1843 - 1844 in Virginia, and died February 19, 1919. David & Mary were found to be farming in 1880 near What Cheer, Washington Township, Keokuk Co., Iowa. He was a township officer. Both died in Keokuk Co. and are buried at Highland Cemetery(?). In the 1860 census, a David and Mary J. Baxter are found living in Breckenridge Co. (now Lyon Co.), Kansas. David was a carpenter, had $1500 in real estate and $150 in personal property. All of the following information found in the census fits perfectly: Age 28, born in Pennsylvania, a number of Welsh people lived nearby, his wife is Mary J. (Breckenridge, Kansas 1860 Federal Census)

1833 - 1910
ELIZABETH BAXTER was born in January 12, 1833 Pennsylvania and died September 30, 1910 in Johnson Co., Iowa. She married EDWARD TUDOR September 16, 1856 in Johnson Co. Iowa., son of RICHARD TUDOR and ELIZABETH LUMLEY. He was born March 16, 1825 in Wales, and died September 29, 1902 in Johnson Co. Iowa. Edward was christened in Graig Independent Church, Machynlleth, Wales. Both were buried in the Welsh Cemetery in Johnson County.

WILLIAM BAXTER was born July 27, 1836 in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania and died in March 20, 1915 in What Cheer, Iowa.
He married ELIZABETH WILLIAMS (a.k.a. Lizzie) June 12, 1877 in Iowa City, Iowa, daughter of RICHARD WILLIAMS and JANE TUDOR. She was born in January 14, 1847 in Iowa City, Iowa, and died in September 30, 1934 in What Cheer, Iowa. William was found to be farming in 1880 near What Cheer, Washington Township, Keokuk Co., Iowa, where he built a house. Their son JOHN WILLIAMS BAXTER later farmed there.

She was born in 1842 in Pennsylvania, and died in October 18, 1926 in Washington, Keokuk Co, Iowa. They were buried in McFarlane Cemetery, Washington Township, Keokuk CO, Iowa. Owen was and was found to be farming in 1880 near What Cheer, Washington Township, Keokuk Co., Iowa.

MARGARET BAXTER was born in 1846 or 1847 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1880 in Des Moines, Iowa. She married THOMAS E. JOHNS January 17, 1871 in Johnson County, Iowa. Thomas was born Abt. 1847, Wales, and died Aft. 1880 in Des Moines, Iowa. Thomas is said to have been a banker in Prairie City, Iowa, commuting from his residence in Des Moines.

From the 1880 History of Keokuk County Iowa:
Johns, Thomas E. general merchant, Keswick; born in Glanmorganshire, Wales, May 30, 1846; he emigrated to this country in 1865, and located in Johnson county and engaged in farming; in March, 1871 he came to this county and continued in his business in Prairie township until 1876, when he entered upon his present business; Mr. Johns came to this country a poor boy, without a dollar, but by industry and good management has been eminently successful; his career as a merchant is in keeping with all his other undertakings; he is well suited for his business, prudent, but generous in his dealings; he has made many friends during the time of his residence in the county; on the 17th of January, 1871, Miss Margaret Baxter, of Johnson county became his wife; she is a lady of much refinement; her father John Baxter was a native of Wales, and came to Cambria Pennsylvania, about 1830.
